LESSON GOAL
BY THE END OF THIS LESSON,
you’ll understand the difference between doing chores as part of your responsibilities at home and doing jobs to earn money. You’ll learn why both are important — and how knowing the difference helps you start earning like a boss!
💬 let’s break it down
Let’s be real: nobody loves cleaning their room or taking out the trash 😅
But some things we do just because we’re part of a family or a team. That’s called chores.
🧹 Chores are things you do to help out at home — without getting paid.
They teach responsibility, teamwork, and being helpful even when no one’s watching.
💼 Jobs are things you do for extra pay — like washing the car, babysitting, designing something, or doing something helpful that goes above and beyond your regular chores.
You can be paid in money, gifts, or trade — but the key is that it’s a choice and it has value to the person paying.
Here’s how to tell the difference:
Chore: Feeding your pet (part of being a pet owner)
Job: Designing a dog-walking flyer and walking your neighbor’s dog
Both are awesome — but only one earns you cash.
🧠 ANALOGY: Chores vs. Jobs is Like Practice vs. Game Day
Doing chores is like practice — it keeps your home running smoothly and helps your team (your family). 🏠
Doing a job is like game day — you show up, perform, and get rewarded for your effort. 🏆
You need both to grow strong, skilled, and successful.
🤔 critical thinking questions
What chores do you do that help your family, even if you’re not paid?
What’s something you could do that would be valuable enough to be a job?
Why is it important to do both — chores and jobs?
How do you feel when you help out vs. when you earn money?
✍️ journal entry: “What I Do and What I Could Do”
Make two lists:
One for chores you already do (without pay)
One for jobs you think you could offer (to family, neighbors, or friends)
Then write a sentence:
“One job I’d love to try is…”
👨👩👧👦 ACTIVITY WITH FAMILY OR FRIENDS: Chore or Job? Game Show!
What You’ll Need:
A whiteboard or paper
A few made-up tasks
Your family or sibling
What to Do:
Take turns reading out tasks like:
“Wash your dishes”
“Clean the neighbor’s car”
“Fold your own laundry”
“Make a logo for dad’s business”
Decide together: Is it a chore or a job?
Explain your answer!
🎯 What This Teaches: Learning the difference between helping and earning helps you become more independent — and more motivated!
💵 real-life practice: Ask to Do a Job for Pay
This week, think of one job that’s above and beyond your regular chores.
Ask your parent or someone you trust if you can do it for pay.
Ideas:
Organize the pantry
Design a flyer
Bake something to sell
Wash the car
Make a spreadsheet
Negotiate your price (just like a boss!), and do your best work.
🌟 Bonus: Add your earnings to your Earned Income Tracker or your buckets!
