LESSON GOAL

BY THE END OF THIS LESSON,

you’ll understand that money isn’t the most important thing — it’s a tool that helps you do important things. You’ll learn to think about money as something that helps you build, give, grow, and create a life you love, not just something to collect.

💬 let’s break it down

Okay, real talk — money is cool. It can buy snacks, toys, trips, and even help people in need.

But money by itself? It doesn’t do anything. You can’t eat it. You can’t play with it. You can’t hug it.

Money is just paper, metal, or numbers on a screen — until you decide what to do with it.

That’s why we say:
💡 Money is a tool. It’s not the goal.

You wouldn’t collect a bunch of hammers just to say, “Look how many hammers I have!”
You’d use a hammer to build something awesome — like a treehouse. 🛠️

Same with money. You don’t need a pile of cash to feel good. You need to know how to use it wisely — to help your family, take care of yourself, enjoy fun stuff, and even help others.

In this lesson, you’ll think about what you want money to do for you — not just what you can buy, but what you can build.

🧠 ANALOGY: MONEY IS LIKE A HAMMER

A hammer can build amazing things… but only if you know what you want to build.
You don’t sit around collecting hammers and showing them off, right?

Money works the same way — it’s a tool. It helps you build your dreams. But you are the builder, not the money. Money doesn’t make your life better — how you use it does.

🤔 critical thinking questions

Why do you think some people chase money but never feel satisfied?

Can you think of something meaningful you could do with money — besides buying stuff?

If you had $100, how could you use it to help someone or build something cool?

What do you think people mean when they say, “money doesn’t buy happiness?”

✍️ journal entry: “if i had $1,000…”

Pretend someone gave you $1,000.
You can’t just spend it all on candy and toys.
What would you build, create, or give with that money?
Write a plan, make a dream list, or draw a picture of how you’d use money as a tool to make your world better.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 ACTIVITY WITH FAMILY OR FRIENDS: “MONEY BUILDER BRAINSTORM”

What You’ll Need:

  • Paper

  • Markers or crayons

  • Your imagination

What to Do:

  1. With your family or friends, talk about what you’d build if money wasn’t a problem.
Would you start a business? Build a treehouse? Help people in need?

  2. Everyone draws their own version of how they’d use money as a tool.

  3. Share your ideas and explain why you chose that.

🎯 What This Teaches: Everyone has a different idea of what matters most — and money helps us build it.

💵 real-life practice: “spend with purpose”

This week, look at something you want to buy and ask:

  • What’s the purpose?

  • Will it make my life better or just shorter-term fun?

  • Is there something bigger or more meaningful I want to save for?

Then, make one money decision based on your goal, not your impulse. (Hint: it might feel hard, but it will feel SO good after!)

🌟 Bonus: Start a “Why I’m Saving” list — not just what you want to buy, but why it matters to you.
